EARTHQUAKE SHAKES TORRANCE

SIGNIFICANT INCIDENT

Torrance, Calif., October 18, 2012, 1:15 p.m. – A 7.8 magnitude earthquake along the southern San Andreas Fault has been confirmed by the USGS. The quake began near Palm Springs, and has been felt in the South Bay, LA, Orange County and the Inland Empire.  State of Emergency has been declared. 

Significant incident has occurred at ExxonMobil Refinery. A media helicopter has collided with the Alky Unit at the refinery.  Flight restrictions have been requested. Injuries and environmental impact are being assessed. An update will be provided at 1:50 p.m.

All high school gymnasiums have been determined to be safe for shelters. Dee Hardison Sports Center at Wilson Park is not suitable for shelter.

An Evacuation Center has been established at the Ken Miller Recreation Center 3341 Torrance Blvd.  After securing your possessions, collecting loved ones (including pets), and you are able, you can relocate to the Center closest to you.

Torrance Police and Fire units are responding to the areas. The City requests that the community remain calm, do not use the telephone unless there is an emergency, check your home for damage, secure family and pets, remain where you are if your building is safe, and be prepared for aftershocks.  If shaking begins again and you can safely do so, quickly seek shelter under a sturdy piece of furniture.

Try and keep roads clear to allow emergency personnel access.
